Gabya Class TCG Giresun: A Modernized Frigate in the Turkish Navy Fleet
Gabya Class TCG Giresun (F-491) is a Turkish Navy frigate modernized with advanced combat systems and technology tailored for multi-role missions in regional and NATO operations. Originally commissioned as USS Antrim (FFG-20) in the U.S. Navy, the vessel was transferred to Turkey under the Excess Defense Articles (EDA) program and entered Turkish service in 2000.

Equipped with the indigenous GENESIS combat management system, SM-1 missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Sea Sparrow air defense system, and a 76mm naval gun, TCG Giresun provides strong air, surface, and subsurface capabilities. The ship also operates an S-70B Seahawk helicopter, enhancing its anti-submarine warfare and surveillance range.

Serving in the Gabya-class fleet, TCG Giresun has played an active role in joint NATO drills, maritime security patrols, and strategic deterrence missions across the Aegean, Eastern Mediterranean, and Black Sea. With its upgraded sensor suite and combat readiness, the vessel is a vital component of Turkey’s modern naval presence.
