The first F-16C Fighting Falcon to arrive in Turkey marked a significant milestone in the modernization of the Turkish Air Force. This advanced multi-role fighter jet was delivered under the Peace Onyx I program, which was a series of agreements between the United States and Turkey aimed at upgrading Turkey’s aerial combat capabilities. The initial batch of F-16Cs arrived in Turkey in the late 1980s, with the first aircraft officially delivered in 1987.
Manufactured by General Dynamics, now Lockheed Martin, the F-16C is renowned for its agility, advanced avionics, and versatility, capable of performing a wide variety of missions, from air superiority to ground attack. The acquisition of these aircraft not only enhanced the tactical and operational capabilities of the Turkish Air Force but also laid the groundwork for subsequent collaborations and local production efforts, such as the co-production of F-16s in Turkey by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI).
