The Turkish Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10, registered as TC-JAF, holds a notable place in the history of Turkish aviation. This aircraft was part of the fleet during a pivotal period of expansion and modernization for Turkish Airlines. However, TC-JAF is most infamously remembered for its tragic involvement in an incident on March 3, 1974. The aircraft, operating as Turkish Airlines Flight 981, crashed in a forest near Ermenonville, France, due to a catastrophic cargo door failure shortly after takeoff from Paris Orly Airport, en route to London Heathrow. The disaster resulted in the loss of all 346 passengers and crew on board and remains one of the deadliest aviation accidents in history. The tragic event brought about significant changes in aviation safety regulations and had a profound impact on the global aviation industry, leading to improved aircraft design and enhanced safety protocols.
