The roots of the Turkish Naval Forces trace back to the late 11th century. During this period, maritime activities of the Anatolian Seljuk State were significant. In the Ottoman Empire, naval capabilities further developed, and during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman Navy became a dominant power in the Mediterranean.
In the 16th century, under the leadership of Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha, the Battle of Preveza solidified the Ottoman’s naval supremacy. However, during the decline of the Ottoman Empire, naval power also weakened.
Following the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, the Turkish Naval Forces began to modernize. Throughout the 20th century, the Navy played crucial roles, particularly during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation. Today, the Turkish Naval Forces operate as a regional power with modern ships and submarines.
